Gone are the days when every other student aspired to be a doctor or an engineer. Today the so called unconventional fields like Law, Hotel Management, BBA, Fashion designing are into vogue and students are making a beeline to get into prestigious colleges offering these courses.
The hospitality industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade and
its still growing. Demand for manpower in this industry therefore is immense.
The hospitality industry comprising hotels and catering is among the fastest
growing industries in the world. The hotel industry recruits1 person every 2.5
seconds somewhere or other in the world.
This sector is still evolving and has huge employment potential. In fact it
would mot be wrong to say that it is underemployed.
Hotel Management comes under the service sector and hence the ‘human’ factor
is of utmost importance. The individuals in this industry must have an outgoing
and pleasant personality, capacity for hard work and a genuine interest in
working with many people.
The ability to keep the situation under control during any crisis, discipline,
commitment and dedication is a must.
After School: After Class X
Room attendants, chambermaids, cooking assistants / cooks, receptionists and
bellboys are craft level workers. Some jobs (bakery, reception etc.) may need a
short-duration vocational training.
After Class XII: Apprenticeship
All hotels take on apprentices. The apprentices are paid a stipend during the
training period, which may vary from six months to two years. Hotels conduct
regular classes and the apprenticeship board conducts periodic tests.
After Class XII: Diploma / degree in
hotel management
These courses are conducted by several types of institutions — government and
privately managed institutions or institutions operated by chain of hotels,
hotel schools conducting training programmes in collaboration with international
hotel institutions etc.
Selection to most of the courses is through an entrance exam which includes a
written test, interview and group discussion.
Various entrance exams are conducted for students who wish to join courses in
hotel management after Std. XII.
